Uechi Ryu Karate is a unique karate system. Based in Okinawa, Japan, it has its origins in Fukien, China in the 19th Century, where the founder, Uechi Kanbun, trained for over a decade. He eventually headed his own dojo there. The Denton Dojo karate group is directly connected with one of Uechi Kanbun-sensei’s students, Shinjo Seiyu. Since Shinjo Seiyu-sensei’s passing, his son, Shinjo Kiyohide-sensei has headed the Uechi Ryu Kenyukai Karate group, to which the Denton Dojo karate group is connected.
Because of Uechi Ryu’s close contact with it’s Chinese roots, it has a very different look and feel from what people usually think of as “karate”. Rather than linear, it is circular; rather than hard, it is hard/soft, rather than fist, it is open hand; and rather than high, impressive kicks, it has low, quick snap kicks.
The emphasis at the Denton Dojo karate group is the same as that of the Shinjo Kenyukai Dojo in Okinawa…. strong karate through a lifetime of effort. This is a very traditional system, based on long term kata mastery and intense physical training and conditioning. It is not for children or folks who shy away from physical effort and physical conditioning.
The instructor of this group has over 30 years in karate under his belt. He is well known within the Uechi Ryu community for his karate and character.
